You have had a positive pregnancy test. What now? An ultrasound can give you more information about your pregnancy. Lifeline provides free limited obstetrical ultrasounds for mothers who meet certain criteria. An ultrasound is able to reveal more details about your pregnancy. This includes how far along in your pregnancy you may be. An ultrasound is also an essential part of verifying that your pregnancy is located in the uterus. It is a procedure that lets us look inside the womb using sound waves.

At Lifeline, a registered nurse trained in limited obstetrical ultrasound will perform the scan. The nurse will take measurements to estimate the baby’s stage of development. She also will look for a heartbeat and measure it. You can also get photos from the scan to take home with you. Your ultrasound results will be reviewed by Lifeline’s Medical Director who is a practicing OB/GYN doctor. When you come for your ultrasound, a friend or family member may sit in with you if you prefer.

How do I prepare for an ultrasound?

  • Have a positive pregnancy test from Lifeline or another clinic
  • Call our clinic or make an appointment online
  • Bring a photo ID
  • Bring a letter from your doctor or another clinic verifying pregnancy
  • Come with a full bladder. (This makes everything easier to see during the scan.)

Next Steps

Following the ultrasound, we will be available to address any questions or concerns you may have. Lifeline is also able to provide the support you may need for the choices ahead of you.
